Come Carolling – what a fun idea! Sing carols around our suburb and drop into letterboxes invitations to our Christmas services. And to make the invitation more welcome, give each household a slice of yummy Christmas cake. Yes, we agreed. Let's give it a go !
So on the week before Christmas, 6 ladies met one morning to carve up slabs of Christmas cake and pop slices into plastic bags. On the Monday evening before Christmas we met for a warm-up with our 2 saxophone players, and off we set with our cake-laden invitations. In perfect weather we stopped outside houses near the church and sang out our praises to the Lord. As it began to get dark, we sang under street lights and torches lit up the music for our musicians. It was such fun that somebody said "We should have thought of doing this years ago".
On the Tuesday before Christmas, it began to drizzle just at the time we met in the hall. But several families had arrived despite the rain, so we sang carols in the hall with our wonderful saxophone players. When the rain stopped, groups went out, each to a different road to deliver the invitations. So we achieved our objective, even in bad weather.
Almost 150 invitations were distributed in the streets around the church. We heard of several families who attended services just because they had received an invitation in their letterbox. What a lovely way to celebrate our Lord's love in sending Jesus, encouraging people to come to church.
